Worship at Northeast
Worship is central to our life together at Northeast. Discover what our gatherings look like, why we worship the way we do, and how you can participate.
What our worship looks like
Each Sunday, we gather as a church family to glorify God, encourage one another, and grow together in Christ. Our worship is centered on God's Word and the good news of Jesus Christ. We read Scripture, pray together, sing God's praises, hear His Word preached, and share in the Lord's Supper each week.
How we sing together
We sing with the lights on.
When we gather to worship, we aren't just a collection of individuals having private experiences with God. We're a church family worshiping together. Through our singing, we encourage one another, build each other up, and remind each other of the truths of the gospel. We want to see and hear the people around us as we lift our voices together.
Participation, not performance.
Worship isn't a concert to watch or an experience to consume. It's an opportunity for the whole congregation to offer God the praise He deserves. Those leading from the front are there to serve and support the church's worship, not to be the focus of it. Our goal isn't to showcase the people on stage, but to unite our voices in praise to God.
Songs both old and new.
Newer isn't necessarily better, and older isn't necessarily more faithful. We seek to choose songs that are biblically sound, rich in truth, and helpful for congregational singing, whether they were written centuries ago or just recently. We are grateful for the songs that have strengthened generations of Christians before us, and for those being written to serve the church today.
Different instruments, one congregation.
Our musical arrangements may look different from week to week. Sometimes we sing with an acoustic guitar and a couple of vocalists. Other times, with a fuller band or simply a piano. But regardless of the instruments or the number of people leading, our priority remains the same: to support the singing of the gathered church. The congregation's voice should never be secondary to the music coming from the stage.
The songs we sing
We believe the songs we sing matter. Through congregational singing, we proclaim the truths of Scripture, remind one another of the gospel, and express our praise, prayers, and thanksgiving to God. The songs we sing help shape what we believe, remember, and love.
For that reason, we seek to be intentional about the songs we introduce to our congregation. While musical styles may vary, we evaluate songs using three primary considerations:
Theological richness
We want to sing songs that are faithful to Scripture and rich in biblical truth. Our songs help us grow in our understanding of God's character, His Word, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. We want lyrics that are worth remembering and truths worth carrying into our everyday lives.
Congregational singability
Our songs are chosen for the congregation, not the musicians leading them. We prioritize melodies, rhythms, and arrangements that invite the whole church to participate. A song may be musically beautiful or impressive, but if the congregation cannot readily sing it together, it may not serve our gatherings well.
Enduring relevance
We want to build a collection of songs that will serve our congregation for years to come, rather than simply following the latest trends in Christian music. This doesn't mean avoiding new songs. It means looking for songs with lasting theological and musical value—songs we believe will continue to be worth singing long after their initial release.
